CONTAMINATION BASICS

All hydraulic operations have been failed to 75 per cent because of contaminated and ageing hydraulic liquids. Contamination is the reason for ageing and degradation as well as it causes failure of hydraulic systems for several reasons.

The structure will stop performing as per it is designed, in case, any of these elements are damaged. The subsequent downtime can simply cost an outsized manufacturing plant that has the cost of thousands of dollars for every hour. Maintenance of fluid can help to avoid and to minimize unplanned downtime. This can be achieved through persistent and continuous improvement system that helps to minimize and eliminate all contaminants.

The real thickness of a greasing film relies upon liquid consistency, applied weight, and the general speed of the given two surfaces. In various parts, "mechanical loads" are to such a phenomenal, that these loads help to squeeze the grease into an exceptionally slight film, under 1 micrometre thick. In case, loads turn out to be adequately high, then in such case, the film can be penetrated through the irregularity of the surface of the two parts. It will end in destructive friction.

Micrometre scale is usually used to measure the particle sizes. One micrometre or micron is equal to the one-millionth of 1 meter, in inches it is equal to the “39 millionths of an inch”.

Human discernibility is limited to around “40 micrometres”. Remember that, utmost harmful-affecting atoms in “hydraulic” and “lubrication” operations are less than that limit. For that reason, they are minuscular and cannot be visible to the unaided eye.
